Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her the chance to learn about art literature or theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. Even though DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash in the house of one on the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
