Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). When she was
a young girl she was already a voracious performer, re-enacting commercials on
television for her family's amusement, but she decided to devote her energy to
dancing. She continued to study with a number of well-respected dancers, after
having spent the last nine years learning ballet at Spain's National
Conservatory. She discovered her true calling at age 15, when she topped 300
girls in an audition for an agency for talent. The resultant contract secured
her several roles in Spanish television shows and music videos. This paved the
way for a future career on the screen. Cruz made her debut in a film with The
Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). After that she was briefly
featured in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque
(1992) was her third film. In the film she played one of the four sisters who
were competing for the affection of a handsome deserter from the Army. It also
received several Goyas in Spain, which is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy
Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish actress thanks to her average of three
to four films per year that she added to her resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh)
offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar
(who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she
was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes
(1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). The
luck of her life changed in 1998 when her movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus
Ojos (1998) won her the award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz was able to
travel to English-language films, however All About My Mother (1999) was her
first big international hit. She played a chaste however well-meaning nun. Cruz
became extremely sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic since her film
won many awards and praises. The American comedy Woman on Top (2001) was her
next big project, is about Chefs who have remarkable culinary talents and
extreme motion sickness. While she was in the US,
